Woman is Wax

2023, soy wax, grandmother's dress, improvised poetry, 20 x 20 x 15 ft

"Woman is Wax" was performed after years of working with wax as my primary sculptural medium. After researching the history of and uses for wax, I began to consider it the most divinely feminine of the sculptural materials: where wax was once treasured—attributed to the creation of language (as wax tablets), decorations of war (encaustic paintings on ships), and the church (liturgical candles)—it is now considered a domestic material, deemed womanly in the most reductive sense. "Woman is Wax" is an improvised poetic performance on this realization.
